The screen is still flexible. That's the key to its durability. They merely placed the finished device in a rigid casing (the "prototypes" were literately nothing more than a screen attached to a circuit board).

Also you might be confusing Plastic Logic with Polymer Vision. The latter did have a fully assembled prototype with a roll out screen. They changed this to a series of hinged plates to give the screen a more rigid backing, IIRC because of user input.
