I thought I had
in evilvte "sudo leafpad /etc/gnome-ppp.conf" add text to the beginning of file, amend details to suit your provider (username etc), save and exit.
Insert 3G modem, wait approx 30secs for modem light to settle.
run 'gnome-ppp' (desktop icon) select`HSDPA`from the dropdown list etc etc
Look for new icon in header showing connection.
