IIRC, pdflrf generates lrf as images (pics) of the original pdf, producing rather big files.

So, this is wrong! The lrf files have images even if the sources have not.
Pdflrf might be usefull for complex pdfs (technical books, comics, tables, ...) but if your source pdf files are basically text files, Calibre gives much better results (imho) and logical file sizes.
So, I second what doreenjoy suggests.
You will probably get much smaller file sizes (about 1 MB each).
