I see a couple of things favoring the new ratio.

One is that you get a standard (American) paper width in landscape mode, but you get it in a device that appears to be quite a bit more compact than the Big K.

The second is that most readers don't read by word, but by groups of words or even paragraphs. It's a matter of font size, of course, but it seems to me that the new ratio might actually work better for many readers, once they get used to it. More information per page.

I also think that the screen size might have something to do with making it economically feasible to have a 399 price point.
