In any case, you STILL NEED A LOCAL LIBRARY CARD to borrow e-books from ANY Sony Reader. These libraries have limited copies of e-books available, and are funded by LOCAL taxes. Nobody is getting nationwide free access to a ton of online libraries. Just easier access to your LOCAL libraries.
Sadly I'm coming more and more to support this view - though the initial reports did seem to imply that Sony was providing NYPL access to Reader owners through their software. However that could just be sloppy reporting.
