Your grandmother seems to have been very lucky to have made it through the war, and she looks like a really strong woman, a model to follow.

oh yes, she's infernally strong-willed.

which is what makes her impossible to live with, and also paradoxically (one of) the reasons i love her.
you should *definitely* do the same with your grandfather. i was a little nervous about it myself, but she's so used to me asking questions and wanting to hear the stories that it wasn't really too difficult. i'll treasure these recordings forever, it's really amazing to have them, listening to her voice telling the stories... luckily, it's very easy to get her started. just take out an old photo album, and ask her, "so who's that ? and when was the picture taken ?" and she's off, and she'll go from one story to the next with no interruption (and sometimes in the middle of one story, she's already on to the next one). in the recordings, almost the only thing you hear me saying is occasionally "and then what happened ?" on the other hand, getting the details straight is like pulling teeth ; she's notorious for using the same pronoun to refer to 6 different people in the same sentence. and when i tried to get her to spell people's names for me or give me a name of a place, half the time she would just say "oh, forget it, you don't need that."

(the rest of the what you hear me saying is "how do you spell that ?" and more frequently, "just tell me for god's sake !"

)

BTW, I bought a breadmaker a couple of months ago. Hot darn, I never realised what I was missing! The thing makes gorgeous huge loaves which people LOVE. Which I love, and I've never been a huge fan of bread. I add linseed sunflower and almond meal, and quinoa flour, and chickpea flour, and nuts and fruit and spices.... *droooool*

hee ! here's a little tip : just don't stay in touch with anyone from your school years at all (well, maybe a select few). no insecurity if you've no idea what they're up to !
