i'm listening to some interviews i recorded of my grandmother telling me about her childhood and her life during the war. hearing the stories of the adventures (and misadventures) she had sometimes i'm amazed she survived it. the expression "i've always depended on the kindness of strangers" comes to mind ; she was really lucky, she met so many kind people who helped her out. she was quite young during those years, not even 20 years old, and more often than not she was all alone. i try to imagine being in situations like that ; i really don't know if i could have managed it.
