Maybe because the firmware inside the opus, and more exactely the software (BooReader) is the same application in both Gen3 and Opus, so changing the numbering would be a pain for everyone is the Opus and Gen3 use different version for the same application?

I suspect that the 1.9/2.0 will be the ePub version, and currently sold Gen3 with 1.4 version will be the mobipocket one.
