I don't have any problems with the fruit bats eating the palm fruit (it cuts down on all the new shoots I have to "weed" over the following months when the seeds drop). They just tend to crap fruit-coloured glue around the place, which is not so nice on a big, white house. We leave them be, as they're rather wonderful to look at up close (just off the balcony). The possum, however, doesn't.

We do get the small bats, but their (human-level) relative silence tends to be drowned out by the other fauna's nocturnal roar (fruit bats, possums, turkeys, geckos). Personally, I love it - it's part of why we moved here.
