Sorry... I should've said "who on this side of the Atlantic doesn't know?"

Howdy Doody was a kids TV show starring Buffalo Bob (a man), Howdy Doody (a string puppet), and Clarabell (a clown, played by a man who never spoke on the air until the very last episode... when he said, "Goodbye, kids." snif!), recorded live in front of an audience of kids. Although few remember a single detail about the show beyond that (including me), Buffalo Bob's opening "What time is it?" followed by his and the kids singing "It's Howdy Doody time!" has become part of the American shared history lexicon.

I just saw an article today about the kids entering college in the U.S. being among the first to not know who is being referred to by the phrase, "Heeeere's Johnny!" (If you're one of them: Johnny Carson was the host of The Tonight Show before Jay Leno.)

My, how time does fly...
