I suspect it's partly just because it's (surely) one of the best-selling genres EVER...
And that's partly, IMO, cos people who read romance generally go on to have sex someday, and breed more genetically-predisposed-to-romance-books children, as opposed to many who read sci fi...
(and stop! don't kill me YET! I haz more stories! And besides, I LOVE sci fi)
