I'm late to this thread, but basically agree with all the original points.

Hat's off to the (foolhardy) courage of the original poster. It's not really the sort of line that needs to be public at MobileRead, which aims to be a respectable forum.

While not a writer myself, a good friend of mine who writes academic books which sell reasonably well, is also very relieved to see some of his work pirated at a certain site. As, he sees it, it means they're more likely to be read and cited by the grad student and junior faculty community, and keep his reputation high. I don't find this cynical, merely a rational response to the skill market in which he finds himself.
