Whatever the hardware turns out to be, the ability to run Evernote and synchronize with the Evernote server would be a huge plus. (I wish the iLiad could do that-- it has all the hardware, but is unlikely to ever be supported to the degree required to justify an Evernote integration.)

I was a very happy Newton Messagepad 2000 user, until Apple discontinued the product. I'd probably be using an updated version of a Newton as an ebook reader, note-taker, calendar, etc. if Apple were still making them. I used the Newton in front-lit mode, and found it very readable in all sorts of lighting situations. And I typically got 2 weeks of use out of one set of batteries. Honestly, if I could have an e-ink Newton with updated network hardware (and Evernote synchronization, maybe also iCal sync), I'd be a very happy camper.
