I had a similar problem once with my 505. The battery died and the screen froze, even after charging thru the power port. (ALWAYS charge thru the power port, NOT the usb!) It just appeared dead and wouldn't recover.
Couldn't figure it out but, thanks to the info here, I was able to hard-reset my 505 after a while. This was the only problem with my 505 in over 1.5 years, and it hasn't been a problem since.
BTW, the regular usb cable isn't a "charging" cable--it's really meant to be primarily a data cable. (Note that even the official Sony Reader ac chargers do not use usb.) I highly recommend buying a generic PSP power/data cable. This lets you charge the Reader (faster, more reliably, and while reading) from a usb port through the round yellow power port on the Reader.
