Strange if it sees the SD vard but not the reader. Mine has worked okay with 10.5.5 onwards without any issues.
I assume you are plugging in direct to the PC and not via a hub?
You could try rebooting the MAC and plugging it in again but otherwise I'm at a loss. I don't know enough to use the terminal to get any useful info out of it.
