I'll confirm that what kaz and kris say is very true. Puppy breath is famously (amongst dog-folk) something special. It's a mark of your puppy growing up when his/her breath stops smelling like a soft, fluffy, warm bed feels, and starts to smell like plain, old dogfood (or whatever odious substance he or she has managed to find and consume).
Incidentally, the Airedale mailing list I help run has noted previously the smell of Airedale feet too (assuming they haven't just trod in something). Apparently they tend to smell like corn chips (though I'll just say that Oscar's got more of a soy sauce vibe about his, and that Maggie, for some reason, has an iodine/fresh shellfish/hospital hint about her, ever since the operations).
