Many of us that grew up with family members that still remembered the days of reconstruction following the war of nothern aggression were taught about Texas' special status as a free and independent republic when it joined the US.

The war of the early 1860s was just one of many movements since the founding of the republic to split it into two or more units. Even within the past 15 - 20 years there have been movements such as the PacRim split that would take California, Nevada, Washington, and Oregon and possibly join them with British Columbia to form a new country. (I do not remember how Alaska and Hawaii would be partitioned.)

BTW: RSE, I assume that 1/2 cup of chili powder for 3 lbs of meat was for the mild or tenderfoot chili
