With most companies I contacted, emailing once was enough and staying in contact wasn't a problem.

I had a similar problem 2 years ago. Turned out that they *did* get my emails and would have eventually gotten around to answer them but the customer is in the dark about whether they even got the mail or not (in times of spam filters and greylisting it's not at all unusual for an e-mail to just vanish into the void).
I suggested they use an automatic answering system (every better ticketing system has that built in) so the customer gets a response that their e-mail arrived and will be dealt with (in case of a ticketing system even with the ticket number so you can inquire later).
