Two ways to go about it. One is to get a USB DVD/CD drive. I have one of those. The other way is to get an external drive holder for laptop drives and set the disk up in that before installing it. I have one of those as well, but prefer to do it the first way. The USB drives are not very expensive (I got one by LG and it works very well).

I also got one of those Seagate Free Agent Go drives to back up my various laptops before I upgrade them. I think a 500GB go drive only costs about $135. They work brilliantly, very plug and play, and make data transfer to the new drive easy.

Of course, if anything does go wrong, I just stick the old drive back in the machine while I sort out the problem. I generally keep the old drives stored in a safe place so I've got them if I need them.
