It's not necessary to turn if off but sometimes you have to turn off like on take off and landing while on a plane (I turn mine off when going through x-ray).

In relation to your question about the numbers at the bottom of the screen... they are location numbers which are more precise than page numbers. Page numbers will change based on the font size you choose but the location numbers will always be the same.
