All Judgment Fled by James White is very similar to Rendezvous With Rama, only better. It was written four years before Clarke's novel. Some have called White the British Larry Niven.
His Sector General books are great too.
Amazon has an Omnibus of 3 Sector General stories, Alien Emergencies. It contains Ambulance Ship, Sector General, and Star Healer.
