I read this series as it came out, and liked it pretty well. I'm pretty jaded as far as fantasy novels go, so whenever I find something new (that doesn't include elven princesses or dark elves or orcs) I'm excited.
This one qualifies. I think it gets a little weaker as the series goes on. OTOH, the 4 books of the series are written, and they're all available as ebooks, so you can burn right through them. Figuratively, of course.
