I must respectfully diagree with your notion that people nowadays don't have the patience for, how can I put it, books less focused on action - at least that is what you seem to say. Also, that
The Picture of Dorian Gray and
Moby Dick is somehow better. It's a rather sweeping generalisation, and I think in many cases it has also to do with writing style.
