I would bet I know the reason for the delay: economic crisis. Small company, little income (niche product - small costumer circle), high expences, that led to dismissal elsewhere. Given they dismissed the chief programmer (or he quit himself - happens these times as well), it might have happened no one left could decypher the code...
WHAT?!? Their chief programmer is GONE!?! When did this happen???
