I'm with JSWolf. Try the Honor Harrington series. Also, if you like historical fiction, you ought to try the Flashman series by George MacDonald Fraser. The autor has lifted a character from 'Tom Brown's School Day', Harry Flashman, and written a series of historical novels centered around him.
Although Flashman is a fictitious character, a notorious coward and womanizer, the rest of the stories are dead accurate. There are very funny and very educational. You will get an excellent insight into the Victorian era. Start with the first book in the series 'Flashman' and go from there.
