Hello Meyergd -- and welcome to MobileRead. I regularly read on my Kindle1 and enjoy it very much. I've had no trouble connecting it to my Windows XP system(s). It may be that your "My Clippings" file has gotten too large with all the high-lighting. (Each high-lighted passage is copied into the clippings file.) If you can get the Kindle to connect to a computer, you can copy off the clippings file and then delete it from the Kindle. A brand new clippings file will be created the next time you add a highlight.

Also, since the highlights are stored in sidefiles for each book, you'll want to make sure that there is *some* free space available in the Kindle storage.
