David Drake's RCN series is a lot of Space Opera-ish fun and its got one of the more interesting female characters in Space Opera-- Adele Mundy, the librarian from hell.

John Ringo's frothy Looking glass series offer plenty of action and a fair amount of tongue-in-cheek humor. With, again, some fine secondary characters including a goth-girl super-genius with adult deficit disorder. Battle hardened marines quake when she says; "I'm bored!" And her kitty is a delight. >;-)

Already mentioned: the Honor Harrington series and the superb Vorkosigan saga as well as the 163x series.

Why not just hit the Baen.com free library and see what tickles your fancy? The Retief stories alone are worth the trip.
