I guess the one good thing about Amazon launching the Kindle was that it brought more light into the subject of ebooks. Sony launched the 500 a year before the Kindle I believe and I don't think publishers were sold on the idea of ebooks nor were consumers.
But when Kindle was launched, other companies seemed to take a serious look at the ebook business and a lot of other companies joined the rank in making the readers. I'm guessing when the publishers saw that people were buying these devices they knew they had to jump on board and provide content or else loose out to other publishers.
But it would've been nice if Amazon and B&N stuck to selling books and companies like Apple and Sony competed against one another on the hardware side.
