Famous or infamous, I have to admit that I've never heard of it. What is it?

Oh boy...
4chan is a very large and popular
image board. Image boards are kind of like forums, but they revolve around pictures; threads start with a picture and a message and people can make a comment to the picture or reply with their own (most do so anonymously). Image boards originated in Japan, but now there are several available in the English language, 4chan included (most still have traces of Japanese origin, being oriented to subjects in Japanese culture).
Now, there are many boards in 4chan. For example, there is an video game board (/v/) which is about video games. The most popular and notorious board by far is the random board, /b/, which effectively has no rules outside of banning illegal content (for example, child pornography). This environment, combined with the people who post there, has created an...
interesting culture, to say the least. Many
memes originate in /b/, which has been called "the asshole of the internet." Now, if you want to explore it further, I have only one thing to say; "abandon all hope ye who enter here."
...
And, in other news, moot (4chan's starter, owner, and administrator) has accepted AT&T's explanation.
