I run a smaller company than Bookeen, and I would know if my website was down -- and I would certainly take the time to fix it, regardless of day of the week. There are ways to automate notification of such problems. There is no reason for excusing them on this because of their size; at least in my opinion.
But I agree with the rest of your post, and the spirit it was written in.
