Calibre: Long lines from LIT file

Again a problem with calibre: I try to convert a LIT file to either LRF or EPUB using the latest calibre version.
The problem is that the resulting files have very long lines of text (much longer than the screen is wide). In the calibre preview windows this leads to a horizontal scroll bar but on the device the text is completely out of the screen and not readable.

Do I miss a calibre option to force a line break at the end of each line? Or is the LIT file the problem?

Edit: The file looks ok when open with MS Reader. When converting with ConvertLIT, I can see that the whole file is encoded using the <pre> tag.
