i'll take the sound of rain over the sound of shums any day, particularly since the shums have been in olympic form lately (and no, they apparently do not fear the rain. either that, or they've just got the windows open, which is just like going out in the courtyard, for acoustic purposes). the youngest ones are setting new records for land scream duration, the medium ones have a new game which involves going into the courtyard and bellowing "MEOW !!" over and over. (seriously. i think they're trying to bait my cat, who likes to sit on the window ledge, and sometimes meows if there are people about. but she's got nothing on the shums when it comes to decibel range). the oldest ones (who technically may have passed the age limit for shum status, but hey, as the old saying goes : if it shrieks like a shum and bellows like a shum, it's probably a shum...) are inventing apparently new and colourful strings of invectives in chinese which they are intent on broadcasting to the entire civilized world, which only encourages the youngest shums to scream all the more.
but having said that, given that it is technically JULY, it doesn't seem like it should be so much to ask to have at least one or two (or eleven or twelve...) days without the sound of *either* of them.
