My company had embraced telecommuting for most jobs, but they have changed some technical support jobs to now require the employees to report into an office. I believe that one reason for this is that they need to bring younglings into the job and those guys need to learn from the senior folks in the jobs and they might not have the discipline to work in an isolated environment. Whereas the longer you've been in certain jobs, the easier it is to work from your home with only electronic contact with your peers.
One thing that the company did that I think is brilliant is that they set up "mobility centers". I can walk into any office in any location, log in with my network ID, and be assigned a desk and phone. So, regardless of why you're away from your normal work location, you can put your laptop right onto the corporate network and have a quiet place to work.
