That depends what kind of book you're talking about. With a reference book, I agree - the TOC lets you go to where you want rapidly.

In fiction books, however, my main use for searching is typically when I come across some character I've forgotten about and I want to find out where his name first occurs in the book. That's something you do need a search for, rather than a TOC.
