I have sent e-mail to Astak pointing out this inconsistency. The Epson Broadsheet controller can handle 16 gray scales (e.g. on the Kindle 2), but it is reasonable for a low-cost device to use 8 gray levels instead and that is what all the Hanlin V5 specs say. So I think the 16 levels is a typo.
