I would say this is absolutely the sort of thing a
good editor should be on the lookout for. And they don't need to know everything--they just need to be able to know what kinds of things should be looked up and how to look them up (i.e., good research skills). OTOH, to expect that level of skill from an editor working on mass-produced genre fiction is stretching it a bit far...
