hi juxta, welcome to the site ! i'll be very interested to hear if you do end up making your own reader. i think i actually read an article by a guy who decided to do that, i will have to see if i can dig it up.

concerning the ebookwise, i bought one from an ebay seller who will ship outside of the US (i am in france), you just have to realise that you can't use the garantee if you have a problem with it, but i haven't in over a year and a half. you can find details in the ebookwise forum. also you'd have to buy a power adapter to charge it but those are not too expensive and you can use a generic multi-tip one (details in the ebookwise forum about that as well).

having said this, the ebookwise has many great qualities however it also has some flaws, format support being the main one as you mentioned. if you're willing to do some converting to get your books into the native format it's still a workable option, and the new ebookwise conversion software will accept (drm-free) epub as a source format which is nice. pdfs will definitely pose a problem, however that is true with all readers, the sony 700 being the 6" device which handles them the best but still not ideal ; if possible it's best to avoid pdfs as an ebook format. for the price it's a good device and the ergonomy is really excellent. however i find it too heavy and bulky to carry around with me and ended up getting a sony 700 as well which is smaller, lighter, reads epub natively, and has many of the features i really appreciate in the eb1150 (touch screen navigation, search, notes...).
