i think that might be true for some of the larger devices, but for the opus and other 5" devices i think you can comfortably and securely use them with one hand. i use my 700 with one hand unless i'm in a situation where i am being jostled (métro). however a ring like you suggest could be a very good way to add security for people reading in public transport or the like ; but it would need to be affixed very securely to the device, and i am not sure velcro is good enough for anything other than minor stability needs.
