Diesel cars to tend to be a bit pricier though and the diesel is dearer. The "conventional wisdom" in the UK is that that if you buy a diesel car new, you need to keep it for about 50,000 miles to benefit since, as you say, the car itself is more expensive than the equivalent petrol model and the fuel is more expensive. That's balanced against much better fuel economy.
