I'd almost think that a 4 level approach might be appropriate in some cases like Thomas's:

Series: Star Trek
Subseries: DS9
Subsubseries: Dominion War
Volume: 3

I don't know how much of this is supported by the different metadata formats used by the different ebook formats though.
