That said, like I said, it also happens when I import a local jpg file through calibre. Putting a cover.jpg file into the directory manually works fine. If I then create a book using that cover image, nothing else corrupts, so whatever it is that goes wrong happens during the saving of the imported file.
Hmm tried it with the sillmarillion cover, worked for me. However, I've eliminated one possible step in the process of changing the cover, so if the corruption was happening there, this should fix it. Try the next beta and let me know.
