Apparently I wasn't paying attention and was misled by my results. I used the guide tab and saw that the start text was where I had added it to the opf (at the start of the <guide> section, before the toc text); also had added the 'aname' text immediately after the <body> of my ebook. Are you sure it is the first page or is the reader just starting with page 2. Mobi Readers often skip the cover page when starting up. Try hitting the previous button.
