Personally, I think it's because we associate really good food with French cooking. I was at the Smithsonian's American History Museum yesterday and saw the Julia Child's exhibit. The had a monitor showing an interview that she did discussing French cooking and how she was able to introduce many French cooking techniques to "middle America" (my term, not hers). It was fascinating. They had a mock up of her kitchen containing many of the tools and appliances that she actually used including many of her old cookbooks. I need to go back on a weekday when there aren't so many people there to really get a good look around.
