That would seem to me to be a perfect reason to break it, so that it can be converted and reformatted to a better file format.
Like, if they had a Kindle program you could install on the PC, load up the kindle-book, then copy/paste the text into a calibre or pdf or something.
So, instead of breaking the Kindle file format, simply get an emulator. Unless you need to break the code to emulate it. Probably you do.
