Of course I spoke too soon... I just uninstalled Calibre completely, then reinstalled (0.6.0b11), then restarted the computer (which I had done before - just without the uninstall/reinstall), and now it's showing up. Thanks, and sorry for the false alarm - I'll report back if there are any further problems.
However: now when I click on the Preferences button in 0.6.0b11, I get the following error:
TypeError:argument 1 of QComboBox.findText() has an invalid type
(I can open a new thread for this if you think I should...)
