Denying access to food definitely worked. Most of the washing up is now done. He is "cooking" tomorrow - I think we're having salad (which will make a change from the take aways we usually have on his evenings
).
To be fair to your son, it's supposed to be more hygienic to allow the washing up to dry without using a cloth, but it still needs to be put away! (And I promise not to tell him that
)
