you are right about the sony software, i use calibre exclusively to manage my library since i don't buy from sony, in fact i only installed the sony software very recently to test something out for another member.
while it's charging you can take advantage to load it up with books, so as soon as the red light goes out you'll be ready to start reading.
you can use calibre for this or simply go through the file explorer, since as you've discovered it shows up as an external disk when you plug in the usb.
