Few comments...
1. Given I code virtual machine as a living I will suggest you not to use VM to update F/W on any USB device. Some of the "command " use during a F/W update just doesn't translate well.
2. Calibre is much better than the Sony S/W. I don't use it myself because the current version have problem handling some Japanese and Chinese encoded book.
