Hmmm. Serious question - have you ever written a book?
Publishers do a
lot lot of work, most of which people who've never been involved in the business perhaps don't appreciate. A good editor can make the difference between a masterpiece and a disaster, not to mention all the work that publishers do promoting and marketing books.
Authors
need good publishers, whether the end result is distributed using dead trees or electrons.
