To register your Sony Reader with the Sony store, you must use a Windows PC. But you don't /have/ to register it, if you don't want to buy from the Sony Store, and are happy with other sources of books.

Calibre is cross-platform, and a great way to convert ebooks for use on the Sony. (& to store, organise & transfer ebooks as well.)
